But on a serious note - jolly good idea - would be better if it was backed up by a "bag it and bin it" message, although not sure how that could easily be communicated by an image. Oh, and another important thing to encourage dog walkers to deal with their animals' output is to have loads of bins, either free standing or on lamp-posts to deposit the poop bags in. It takes joined-up thinking and execution to really make a difference and encouragement and practical planning is more effective than castigation. Not that there is ever an excuse for not picking up after your dog, but the responsible owners already do this.

Like it or not there is a growing issue and I fear it'll only get worse if left alone. We need the community to work together to find a solution that sits well with dog owners and non dog owners.

“Bit of a dump if the truth is told”
Reviewed 19 February 2013

I agree with the reviewer from October last year who advised folk not to waste their time. It really needs some serious financial investment to improve what, at present, is a bit of a dump. Small kids probably won't see what adults see though and will still enjoy a romp on the imported sand (from Holland I heard?) Be careful with the young 'uns though - the footpaths and parts of the beach were strewn with dog filth, coupled to which the public toilets had been boarded-up. The nearby Leisure centre had a sign in the entrance telling you NOT to come in to use their toilets but '...go to the public toilets'! We tried the fish and chip shop who were selling appalling quality food (although were very a friendly family I have to say) - we saw frozen packaged chips being tipped into the fryer and the 'haddock' fish was of poor quality and expensive. The whole area looks run-down. Leith high-street a couple of miles away is a far better colourful place to spend time.

If you have your dog on a lead, then it's easy to know where and when it has pooed. And if your dog is off lead and if it is so dark you can't see the poo, then it's a fair chance you can't see your dog either - which is kind of dangerous! Like people, dogs vary, but they don't poo every single time they go out. It is, however, pretty easy to know when they are doing one - especially if they are on a lead. basically, if you keep an eye on your dog, then there isn't a problem. But, if you let your dog roam freely and don't bother to watch it, then you could easily not know it is pooing/harassing other people or dogs etc.

So most of the time there isn't any excuse for not picking up after dog - it is just laziness or complete disregard for other people.

Said as a dog owner who even picks up dog poo when in the middle of the countryside - because it is easy to get into the habit.

down the prom and the streets just off it. There is dog keich everywhere.
I would favour a designated area for dogs and a rule where dogs are on
the lead on the prom and the designated beach area. I realise
this is unlikely to happen so what we really need are Environmental
Officers to turn up and actually patrol the area and earn their
money. As someone mentioned not just 9-5 but early morning / late night too.
Perhaps if a few fines were dished out then we may see less dog crap everywhere.
I know this is a citywide problem but i live in Portobello and i want to
see clean, dogshit free pavements and prom!

I'd welcome dogs on leads on the prom and an area of the beach designated as dog free might be nice, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

I thought the questionnaire was a good start at gauging local opinion though, shame it appears to have been turned into a conflict by the media.

(p.s. not a dog owner myself)

A few dog owners let the others down; but that's true of cyclists, drivers, ...

(But anyone using one of those retractable stealth - cyclist trapping - leads needs to get a talking to)

Every day, rain, hail, sleet or snow dogs and owners are on the beach and for the vast majority of the days of the year, are the only ones on the beach! To introduce a ban seems madness to me - sledge hammer and nut spring to mind. How will it be enforced, if we dont see any indication of the existing legislation being applied, how will this and by whom?

Also, re your online survey, it's just a hunch, but i rather suspect that a reasonable number of the dog owners who are on the beach every day dont use this sort of medium for communication, consultation and participation (know this from day job - our surveys involving older people need have an alternative to online to ensure response requirements!) so how will they be able to get involved as they will be significantly affected by any proposed changes?

We need to see more in the way of enforcing the current legislations and actually see the penalty notices getting enforced. Dog wardens need to be seen and not just between 9-5, but at all times, weekends, evenings and early mornings included. Those who allow their dogs to foul and not clean up need to be tackled, the problem as it is can be addressed by existing legislation without banning a significant section of the community from parts of that community.

We moved to Porty because we believed it to be a tolerant area - the idea of banning sections of the community from one of its key facilities does not sit well with me, for what ever reason.

How does a community balance the wishes of dog owners to enjoy public spaces with their pets and at the same time respect the views of those who are not so keen on canines?

If you think there is a problem, what do you suggest is the solution?

Have your say:-
