GREAT news for residents living in the vicinity of Rosefield Park. It has been confirmed that a CCTV camera is to be sited in the park in the near future. CCTV is a very useful tool that enables police to spot problems before they escalate and to identify the perpetrators of crime. Local residents have for years had to put up with late night noise, graffiti and vandalism. Large groups of youths congregate in the park and the evidence of under-age drinking is apparent in the discarded cans and broken glass every weekend. Benches, litter bins and play equipment have all been vandalised. A bridge over the burn was completely destroyed. Local children are afraid to play in the park and even adults see it as a no-go area after dark. Now, finally, after years of inaction and in response to large numbers of complaints from residents, things are starting to happen. A 2m perimeter fence is soon to be erected at the border with Sir Harry Lauder Road and plans are already afoot to lock the park overnight.
Now we need to ensure that CCTV coverage is extended to include the rest of Portobello for the sake of our safety and quality of life. Don't let the thugs win. Please support our cause by emailing your local councillor.
