St James' Centenary

Postby Maria » 21 May 2012, 13:09

St James’ Parish Church, located in Rosefield Avenue, just off Brighton Place, is celebrating a special anniversary year - this year the Sanctuary of St James’ is 100 years old. St James’ was established in 1874 and services were initially conducted in the old Town Hall then in the “Iron Church” (known locally as the “Tin Kirk”) on the ground in front of Argyle House on Portobello High Street. The land on which the Church and halls now stand was obtained and building of the stone church started in 1911 and the Church was opened for public worship on 9th June 1912.

On 10th June 2012, a special service will be held at St James’ to start the Centenary year. The Moderator of the Church of Scotland will attend the service, as his predecessor did in 1912. Also attending will be previous Minister, Rev Calum Macdougall.

Everyone is always welcome at St James’ but we would like to extend a special welcome to anyone who has had a previous connection with St James’ to come along our service on Sunday 10th June at 11am. You may have been christened or married at St James’, attended Sunday School or one of the uniformed organisations – whatever your connection we would love to see you.
