I am posting this on behalf of Portobello's own cycling club, Porto-velo. Since it started in spring 2012, the club's main focus has been its weekly "fitness" rides, which generally attract experienced cyclists confident about sustaining a brisk pace for 60 miles or so. These have been very successful, but we are conscious they leave a bit of a gap in the market for people who like the idea of getting out on their bikes more, but find this sort of distance and pace a bit off-putting. We've done a few beginners rides in the past, but only on an occasional basis - so this year, we're making them a regular fixture.
The new "nice 'n' steady" rides will take place on the first Sunday of each month, leaving the bandstand (at the E end of the Prom) at 9 am. They will last for 2-3 hours and take you on varied routes, mostly on minor roads. They should be suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities, and for women as much as men. You'll get some healthy exercise, but the emphasis is more on enjoying the countryside and meeting new people.
You can find out more by checking out the club's website - . Each ride is advertised in advance on the Calendar page, and there is more info about what is involved on the FAQs page. Any further queries, please reply to this post, or e-mail the club (details on the website).
