Dear All

A reminder that the Toddler Hut design consultation is taking place in Portobello Library tomorrow 1-4.30pm. The monthly Portobello Organic Market also takes place tomorrow morning in Brighton Park, off Brighton Place.

Portobello Community Council has agreed that Portobello will apply for Fair Trade Town status and the application is being prepared by Jim Baird of the Just World Shop. I'll let you know how they get on. Since Portobello was almost in at the very beginning of the Fairtrade movement, so they should succeed. Get more information: Edinburgh Fairtrade City http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20103/ ... d_events/1 Contact Edinburgh Fairtrade City fairtrade@edinburgh.gov.uk

The Council's town centre manager for Portobello and Leith, Sarah Woodford, has submitted Portobello's application to Keep Scotland Beautiful Seaside Awards. We will hear about whether we have been successful after the judging panel meets at the end of February.

I have also had the good news that the eastern-most groyne will be rebuilt this coming summer, which will further prevent the erosion of the sand on our beach. The work cannot be delayed until autumn or there would be disturbance to migrating birds.

Bridgend Growing Communities is an organic community garden and allotment project based in Edinburgh that aims to give participants a sense of personal effectiveness and well being. An accredited training course in organic gardening will be available free to residents living in the local area. It is hoped that individuals will share the skills they gain with others to transform their own gardens and community spaces. The plan is to make some of the most deprived areas of Edinburgh flourishing fruitful places and to start sowing the green shoots of recovery. More information http://gss.cmph.org/l/2Ez6zVMEwDCdFyEV6cZfWQ

Meanwhile at Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust, Mark Vrionides has joined the team as the new Community Gardening Development Officer. Funded by the NHS, Mark will be working to make Community Gardening more accessible and available across Edinburgh, especially to people affected by health inequalities. Mark will be working closely with community groups, agencies and individuals to break down barriers preventing people from discovering, enjoying and benefiting from community gardening. Any individuals or groups interested in getting involved in community gardening or any gardeners wanting to reach out to new people can contact Mark on 0131 445 4025 or at mark@elgt.org.uk

The Niddrie Burn Restoration is behind schedule, but progressing alongside the new public transport link to the hospital. The contractor was late starting on site and they lost time due to bad weather in August, October and November. Also, the level of the rock at some of the public utility diversions was higher than found in trial hole (sounds familiar?). However, the contractors have returned to site and hope to bring the project back on schedule. They were to shut down for three months over winter but they didn't stop completely.

I am told there is now a budget of £35,000 for 'temporary greening' of one of the plots of land in Craigmillar which where development has stalled due to the recession. This area will be to the west of Richmond Craigmillar Church and the new green space space will be able to be used - we hope - for the Craigmillar Festival Fun Day this summer.

Finally, the Lothian Joint Valuation Board is on a mission to get as many people as possible on the electoral role with the slogan 'Make Your Voice Heard'. The deadline for registering to vote is 18 April to be eligible to vote in the local elections on 3 May. They have asked us Councillors to put a poster and advertise as widely as possible. The website to find out how to go about it is http://www.lothian-vjb.gov.uk and the number to phone is 0131 344 2500.

Best wishes and have a good weekend!
Maureen
