Splashback looking for support to reopen Leith Waterworld

Postby thecrawfords » 06 Sep 2012, 00:01

Can I can post this on this Porty Forum? here goes....As many might know Leith WaterWorld has been closed since around January 2012. As a Porty mum this has been a huge loss and my 2 young girls - we are still in mourning! Local group in Leith called SplashBack are looking to reopen the facility and looking for support from as many people as possible please see below.
Many thanks
Tracy

Dear friends and supporters of the campaign to reopen Leith Waterworld,
As some of you will know, The City of Edinburgh Council confirmed in early summer their intention to sell the ground lease for the Leith Waterworld site. This had been put on hold for six months to allow the option of a community bid to come forward. On the closing date, 7 August 2012, and after a lot of voluntary work, Splashback formally submitted a bid to operate the pool, which we believe would safeguard the future of the site as a leisure amenity:

Last Friday, we publicly published our bid, so that potential supporters can see whether they think our plans stack up. The full bid, and a summary, are available on our blogsite, here: http://www.splashbackedinburgh.blogspot ... mules.html

An article "Splashback unveils its radical plan to reopen Leith Waterworld" appeared in that evening's Edinburgh Evening News:

The Council have now confirmed that the decision on the future of the site will now be taken on Thursday 20th September at a full Council meeting. At present we don't know whether there are any other bids in for the site. Councillors are required to consider the bids in terms of 'best value'. Splashback believes that 'value' is not just the cost of something, but what you get in return - and that the communities in Leith and the city of Edinburgh are best served by a leisure facility rather than another retail outlet.

I am writing to ask you, one last time, to write to your local councillors to express your support for reopening Waterworld. It's vitally important that councillors across the city realise the considerable support for reopening Waterworld, felt across the city, not just in Leith. Every email that they receive is one more reason why they should vote to back the community bid on 20th September.

You can find out who your councillors are here: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/councillors/search
Please write explaining why you wish to see Leith Waterworld reopen, and 'cc' in Splashback at splashbackedinburgh@gmail.com

We are asking you to write in a personal capacity - however if you wish to write in a professional capacity, that would be similarly appreciated: maybe you run a summer scheme, who had to travel to access suitable facilities this year; maybe you are involved in an agency providing services for people with disabilities, who miss the facility; maybe you run a business in Leith and believe the additional footfall to the area contributes to the viability of your business and contributes to the local economy.

Please do get in touch - it is the support we have received that has spurred us to continue with the campaign to reopen Waterworld.

With very best wishes

Johnny
