Discussion and debate on the issues affecting Portobello

Openreach High Speed Internet

Thought some of you may be interested in the map I've created showing which postcode areas in Portobello are likely to get BT Infinity (or other Fibre broadband based on Openreach Fibre to the Cabinet) now that the Portobello phone exchange is enabled for it. See http://www.openheatmap.com/view.html?ma ... Tektronixs for the map. The smaller and lighter the dot is, the less chance that postcode has of getting Superfast Broadband

What is interesting is that most of the centre of Portobello will miss out - this is because we are already connected direct to the Exchange rather than to the green cabinets you see round the streets. It's been a big advantage for fast ADSL but unfortunately wont allow the current Openreach as that relies on a connection to the street cabinets.

The data I've used has been grabbed from some of the online postcode checkers who had access to per postcode information from December 2011 by searching for each postcode in the area. This is out of date in terms of which exchanges will be enabled but as the data for Portobello was there it is likely fairly accurate in terms of whether fibre will be available to each postcode. Taking a rough guess that all postcodes contain the same number of houses, it looks like 85% of Portobello and Craigmillar will get connected if Openreach decide to enable every street cabinet.

Very disappointing for those of us who live in the Centre of Portobello!
