Mount Lodge House

Hi,
Just to let those of you who replied to our original post know that Alistair and I made it up to the Edinburgh Room on Saturday. We obtained a copy of a map from 1824 showing the house and its extensive lands and pond. Unfortunately, there were no press cuttings regarding the house or its demolition. The records at Meadowbank House show that London and North East Railway company were the last owners of the house and grounds before it was sold to the Council in the thirties and subsequently demolished to make way for the housing on Mount Lodge Place and Windsor Place.
We will keep hunting for photographs and let you know of any further info as and when (if) we get it.

My Great Grandfather, William Ballie Torrance, was, I belive the last tenant of Mount Lodge, where he brought up his three daughters (after their mother died in childbirth). He was the manager of a flour mill in Midlothian, trading with shippers in Leith and lived here in Portobello as it was mid-way.

I have half a dozen black & white photographs (copies) of Mount Lodge, inside and out, and the garden where my grandmother and her sisters kept their Shetland ponies!

The house was, I was told by my father who remembered it, was in the 'Colonial' style, something that might have been built in India. It certainly seems to have been quite 'posh'! I think the story of the portico bening saved is true; I'll check with other members of the family who may have more information.

If anyone wants to know more, let me know and I'll see if I can get any of the older members of the family to put something on the board.

What a brilliant surprise to see your post re. Mount Lodge House. Getting the pictures on the site (as Bob has kindly offered to do) would be amazing. To actually get a glimpse of the interior would be fascinating also. I do hope it will be possible.
We were very interested in the information you have given so far and if there are other members of your family that can provide more detail that would be very welcome. It really will bring the whole thing to life. If theres anything further that we can help with, please let us know.

What about the other big houses that stood in Portobello?

Does anyone have any photos of Mount Charles, Bath Street or Marlborough Mansions, Promenade they could share?

Can we add Jessfield, where the library now stands, and Rosefield House/Cottage to this list? Brightons Residents Association is working on a local history project to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year and we hope to put on a multi-media exhibition in the library in September. We are keen to hear from anyone with photos and memories they would like to share of living in the Rosefield/Brightons area. We could also use some help from someone with video editing experience.

I have the 1881 UK Census on disc and looked up Mount Lodge. There are 2 separate entries for that address
