Portobello 1906

I thought some of you might be interested to see this scanned copy of a 1906 postcard of the Municipal Buildings, now of course Portobello Police Station. The card was gifted recently to Inspector Wardrope and is date stamped on the reverse 'Portobello, 10:30pm, July 3, 1906" and addressed to Mr and Mrs Wright, 1 Ramsay Place, Portobello. The name of the seller is printed on the front, M. Bailey, Promenade and the publisher, Charles Voisey, London on the reverse.

What the scan doesn't demonstrate is that the card is unusual in that it has been printed onto a very thin sheet of metal, possibly tin, giving it a shiny, almost irridescent quality.

Just found this from a while ago. Doesn't the High Street look brilliant? Almost expect to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid come bursting out of the Police Station! (no, I'm not drunk!)

The orange-red building next to the Police Station housed a barber shop and a pawn shop owned by Bernard Waugh, the great-grandfather of my aunt who still lives in Portobello. Bernard Waugh was struck down by a horse and carraige when he stepped out of his shop to check the time on the tower clock.

btw: I have a great picture of the High St., by Aidan Bremner above my fireplace. It is sort of the same angle as these pics. Drawn from high above Brighton Place looking toward the police station. It always gets remarks.

Ive started scanning the 2 Portobello postcard volumes, incase they ever get damaged, I will post them when finished (it may take a little time as there is a hellavalot!!)
