If the public visibly see people making an effort to keep the area clean then they might think twice of dropping litter or maybe walk a little further to find a bin that is not as full.
I also suggest that the promenade would benefit from some larger bins,the type being used outside tenements.These would be useful near the car parks etc .
I just find this matter very frustrating particularly when the council are encouraging people to be responsible for their litter,they could do their bit by emptying bins regularly.

I last posted a birthday card there in June and was told the envelope arrived with oily/greasy circles on it. I didn't understand that until I noticed the letter box being emptied once when I was walking past. I saw the Postman extracting the mail from the rubbish inside. He was wiping bits of sausage roll and pastry from the envelopes. He cleared the rest of the rubbish out, locked the Pillarbox (!) and drove off. It's a bad idea having an over-flowing bin next to a Pillar Box.
People don't show much respect for the mail nowadays. I don't think beach visitors from a hundred years ago would have stuffed pies and sausage rolls into the Pillar Box.
I had come back to say that other Promenade walkers and neighbours, especially older ladies (people you wouldn't think would be interested in a SurfRaker Beach Cleaning Machine) are having little chats about it. The Lunch Club's are buzzing! They're saying how smart the tractor and machine look when they're going along together and how clean and fluffy the beach looks. I suppose it does look a bit like a newly hoovered carpet. So it's a pity that a small white smelly bin has over-ruled the conversation.

Lots of comments about the cost of the new beach cleaner.
Does anybody know if the Forth Ports Authority still contract and pay the Council to clean the beach every day? If so does their payment not cover the cost of machines and manpower to provide such a service?
The beach is looking first class - whoever is paying!

£40,000 is my recollection of our conversation but I may be wrong. I know it sounds like a lot of money but we are talking about a long term investment into keeping Edinburgh's seaside at an acceptable standard of cleanliness. Besides, it must be a cheaper option than continually paying to patch up the old machines. Hopefully, Robert will post a progress report soon but the general consensus so far seems to be that the Surf Rake is making a significant difference.
