Burning Christmas trees on Portobello Beach

... apparently someone (art student?) was burning 26 Christmas trees on Portobello Beach last Friday, and filming the results. Does anyone know anything about this? Even better... any photos?

I'm not sure what is more bizarre - the fact that someone did this, or the fact that someone counted the number of trees concerned. Does the number 26 have significance? The number of fortnights in a year? The number 26 bus? We should be told. And hey, it's the 26th today!

I live in Portobello, so of course I'm never here during the day! They were seen by a friend who lives in Bruntsfield but works on the High Street. And yes, my first question was "Did you count them?" (The answer was "yes").

But how were they laid out? This could be crucial to the reasoning behind it. I mean, were they just stacked up in a random manner which would imply a late Guy Fawkes celebration, or were they laid out in a sort of ritualistic way which is altogether more sinister

and what was wrong with utilising the councils service of recycling the old christmas trees.
Not to mention the mess the ash will have made of the beach when a lot of folk are trying to keep the area clean.
The beach is an area that we should all take responsibility in looking after.They'll be burning cars on it next???

We're off back to sunny Tollcross on saturday to help burn last years trees in the stair fireworks do, but a January sacrifice sounds much more fun!
