Litter bin provision on Prom

A glorious weekend and lots of visitors to the beach, but once more the bin provision proved to be totally inadequate. By the time most people were making their way home the bins were overflowing all the way along the Prom. The worst spots were, again, outside the Bedford Hotel and around the foot of Bath Street. It was pleasing to note that the vast majority of beach-users had at least attempted to dispose of their litter thoughtfully, with many carefully placing carrier bags full of rubbish around the bins.

At the risk of repeating myself, we simply MUST have a more pro-active policy of bin provision that takes into account the larger numbers of visitors at this time of year, as this unsightly mess is totally unacceptable. Those businesses that profit from the influx of day-trippers must also accept some responsibility. Surely it’s not asking much for the owners of the Bedford Hotel to organise some kind of temporary bin for their ‘al fresco’ patrons?

The problem is by no means confined to Portobello. I cut through Princes Street Gardens on my way home and the situation there has been quite disgraceful in recent weeks. I’m all for the Council’s plans to increase the number of Environmental Wardens. By all means, let’s crack down on the litter louts, but we also need to give people the opportunity to dispose of their litter properly.

There's something almost respectable about the way people have stacked their rubbish against and in some cases on top of the overflowing bins. It shows they wanted to use them but couldn't.

Perhaps the "Dalek" bins from the Newtown will be available soon. I read in the paper that the residents object to them because they're ugly to look at and they say they spoil the conservation area - imagine!

They'd look fine down here though. They're just little black bins - a bit like the ones here already.

As a dog owner, I use the bins quite a lot and would like to see more bins still.

I totaaly agree with Bob's comments.

I walked along the prom last night and every bin from the pool top the arcade near the burn was overflowing with rubbish.

If the businesses on the prom that sell fast food want to help improve Portobello's image and help attract more visitors then they must do their bit and help by putting out more bins during very busy times.
I'm sure that there is a legal responsibility on owners of fast food outlets to clear up rubbish outside their premises.

Many of the public try to use these bins but others don't.

I like to use this forum to request that the Environmental wardens visit Portobello Beach during school holidays and encourage the public to use the bins or face a fine.

When it's busy ,ie any dry warm day, a mobile refuse van from the council should be despatched to patrol up and down the prom emptying the bins and sweeping up other mess.

If nothing's done then visitors will stay away and everyone will suffer.How can we really expect Portobello bEach to get an award when it get into this state every time it's sunny.
