Doors Open Day 2008

Postby wangi » 25 Sep 2008, 23:06

This Saturday (27 September) is the annual "Doors Open Day" in Edinburgh, which sees many buildings which are normally closed to the public opened up for the day. For a list of what's open see the programme at: http://www.cockburnassociation.org.uk/d ... sp?page=33

A summary of buildings open in the local area:

Holyrood Abbey Church
83 London Road, EH7 5TT.
Open: 10am to 5pm
Malcolm Fraser Architects designed and supervised
the recent renovation of Holyrood Abbey,
providing much needed new facilities and space
within the building. A range of guided tours,
talks, presentations and displays will demonstrate
how the project has turned the original building
into one which is both beautiful and enjoyable to
be in.

Waste Aware Education Cabin
Seafield Community Recycling Centre,
Fillyside Road, EH7 6RD.
Open: 10am to 4pm
The Waste Aware Education Cabin is a newly
developed community resource designed to educate
people on a range of issues to do with recycling.
Visitors will be able to take part in a waste
workshop, a range of fun activities, a guided tour
of the centre and a chance to see the compactor
trucks crushing recycled waste.

The Coal Bunker
Entrance via John Street Lane West (behind
Pittville Street), Portobello, EH15 2BY.
Open 10am to 2pm
The extension to the original house, which itself
dates back to 1826, was built in 2007 as a
replacement for an old, damp scullery and coal
cellar. Despite having a limited budget, Crichton
Wood Architects succeeded in coming up with a
unique and imaginative design which makes the
best use of the limited space. The design won the
Edinburgh Architectural Association’s Small
Project Award. The architect will also be
available on the day to discuss the project with
visitors.

St Philip’s Church
Brunstane Road North, Joppa, EH15 2DL.
Open: 9am to 5pm
Constructed out of Craigleith stone with a 175
foot towering spire, St Phillip’s was built in 1877
by architect John Honeyman in a Victorian Gothic
style. A fire in 1998 resulted in an extensive
refurbishment programme, including the
installation of new contemporary stained glass
windows by Douglas Hogg, which went on to win
the Saltire Society Art and Architecture Award
in 2003. A temporary display of contemporary
Scottish art entitled ‘Into the Green’ will be on
display and musical recitals will be given
throughout the day.
