I was out walking with my boys a couple of weeks ago (the kind of exciting walk that involves bridges over railway tracks, to watch trains, and mice and rats running across the path in front of you...), and we came back by the golf course and then under the railway bridge to Brighton Place. As we came under the bridge, eldest offspring noticed the crest on the Porty, Edinburgh's Seaside sign and asked me why it has cannons (should that have an s at the end?) on it. I of course had no clue but promised him I would post here to ask. Any explanations welcome!
