Is Facebook killing Talkporty?

Yes, I know - it's the holiday season, but it seems to me that Talkporty has been pretty quiet of late. I have my own reasons for not posting much recently, which is largely because I have had very little access to the internet of late, and no doubt others have their own. Porty and PoP for example are probably preoccupied with business matters. But I'm also sure that Facebook is having an effect. It's obvious that people are posting on Fb rather than on Talkporty. As a late adopter, I'm already bored with the limitations of Fb. It hardly lends itself to serious discussion, but maybe that's why people like it. As a means of promoting businesses, interest groups or causes it is a very successful tool, which is why I have persevered with it. I would be happy to delete my own personal page but I suspect this may then mean that I am unable to administer other pages I have created. Frankly, I want to be able to micro-manage my friends/work colleagues/relations - I don't want them all in one place.

Personally speaking I don't think it has anything whatsoever to do with Facebook. I like Facebook because I can interact with people from all over the world who have nothing at all to do with Portobello. The reason I don't post here much any more is because all the fun has gone out of it for me - end of, and that's a real shame.

I admit I'm on Fb more these days. I like keeping in touch with old friends and far flung relatives, as well as those closer to home. I don't tend to have work colleagues on there. In particular, I am happier posting personal photos and info to a selected group rather than to the general public. I also found Fb was a useful additional site for advertising PONGS events.

I got embarrassed logging on to TP and seeing my name appear consistently as the last poster. If I felt like that, I can imagine what others thought! I think you need a crucial core of regular posters and that number has dropped. As you say, there will be a variety of reasons for that - for example,some have moved out of the area and others have new ventures off line - but the end result is the same. Unless new folk take the place of those who have dropped out, then things will grind to a halt.

The Matters thread still seems to have bursts of activity, but G&TT is certainly much quieter. As Epykat says, the fun element has dwindled.

I was forced onto FB as the only way to get times and dates for meetings! Then I realised it was handy for keeping track of pals and acquaintances when I don't see them in real life much/ ever, though that can be a bit depressing at times. Now I use it to play lexulous instead of doing any work

I hadn't realised till you mentioned it, but I'd stopped thinking of TalkPorty as a pub-like place for banter and started to see it as more of an interesting noticeboard to check in on ever so often. Oops.

agree with epy - its not fun anymore. Do you remember a Friday night on TGIF - the forum was positively jumping! If you weren't out, you'd definitely get people to chat to online. I loved it. Remember cleopas and his quizzes. lol.

Don't believe its because of facebook, I use it to keep in touch with old school friends/friends abroad.
