Solar Pannels on Listed building.

Postby amortsdragon » 26 Jan 2012, 22:17

Hello I was wondering if anyone could help.

We live in a category B listed building. Now I know we need to get planing permission I Just don't know where to start.

I was wondering if anyone else in a listed building has solar panels or know how you get the ball rolling on the planing.
Rest assure no one would be able to see the panels from the street.

thank you in advance for any help.

If there not visible you're in with a chance. You'll almost certainly need Listed Building consent and the planners will probably insist on planning permission. The first step is probably to speak with the planners, maybe with photos and a map. For an application the minimum requirements are usually a location plan, site plan, roof plan, specification/details of the panels. Photos and elevations may also be required depending how visible they might be.

Crikey there is a lot more to this than I thought.

Our roof is a M shape I was told by solar panel adviser that the panels would sit in the middle of the pitch of the M shape.

I gosh I don't know if I am savy enough to do this.

If they're not visible at all you might get away without planning, but Listed Building consent would still be required (no fee for that kind of application). There also wouldn't be much need for elevations and the like. Location plans can be bought on-line from OS and the like, you can scale it up and knock up a reasonable site/roof plan easily enough. Look at the Planning Portal and you can view applications and see the level of information required. It not necessarily that much.

If they are in the valley just watch out for overshadowing by chimneys and such like as you can loose a lot in performance, and get a few quotes. PV prices have dropped a lot in the last couple of years, and there are plenty of decent installers out there, but there are also a lot of cowboys and crooks that have managed to get in on the action.

You can also talk it over with a Planning Officer if you have time to visit the Planning Helpdesk at the main Council office on East Market Street.

I could be wrong but was there not someone in Pittville Street wanted solar panels and was knocked back by planning?
Don't think PCC approved either.

The permitted development rights changed last week, so you now need Planning Permission in a Conservation Area regardless of where/how visible any panels are. You can download the forms and guidance notes from the planning part of the Council web-site. It'll also tell you the minimum information required (location plan, site plan etc.)
