Porty- British Champions

Today Portobello Water Polo mens team won the British championship. What a fantastic achievement . Mostly local lads they won 8-5. The highest level the game is played at in Britain. Looks like the struggle to persuade the council to install a pool with a moveable floor,paid off.

Brilliant news about the water polo team. Don't think it was down to the movable floor at the Baths though, pretty sure Porty(the team) has won it in the past without it. This may have been before Portobello was designated Village status. Is it officially a village?

I'm reliably informed that this is the first time ANY team from Scotland has won the British Championship. The competition was previously known as the "deep water" championships. Played in pools that were sufficently deep enough to meet or exceed the rules for Water Polo. The old pool had a permanent shallow end.

Portobello have been beaten finalists 6 times in the past.

Back in 1997 they did win The British Cup, which is a different and lesser competition.

Apparently they were around 35/1 to win it this time around.

With this being a celebration and homage thread, it seems churlish to be sidetracked with a debate about portobellos village credentias. Since when did churlish stop us?

I know I said it but I dont consider Portobello a village, its a suburb. Nor do I think its full of idiots, we undoubtedly have some but its probably consistent with other communities of our size. Not sure about witch hunts either, surely theres no need? Porty's witches don't practice their craft in secret , do they?

Sorry Mak. My mistake, it's Porty that has a penchant for multiple smileys. I wasn't trying to turn it into a negative thread. I think that the achievements of the water polo team is fantastic and I hope that they get more praise and publicity than this forum provides, although if it hadn't been for Porty's post we would probably have never heard about it until the Porty Reporter. I'm assuming it will be on the front page of the next issue, or page 3 would be good too.
