Discussion and debate on the issues affecting Portobello

Sport in Porty!

Postby PortySeahawks » 07 Sep 2012, 16:43

Thought it would be a good idea to start a thread where people can enjoy different sporting activities, both for viewing and taking part in Porty.

I'll start with my club, City of Edinburgh Basketball Club which was founded in 1988 when the successful junior teams of Portobello and Wester Hailes combined to enter the senior men’s national league. Portobello BC had evolved from the Portobello Old Parish Church Youth Club (POPYC) of the 1960’s. In the early 1970’s Portobello BC based itself at Portobello High School. The arrival of Toni Szifris, whose father Boris virtually founded the sport in the East of Scotland, as head of PE at Portobello High School was a catalyst for the renaissance of the club which went from strength to strength thanks to a committed youth-development policy.

City of Edinburgh Basketball club today boasts over 200 playing members ranging from Under 10's all the way to Seniors for both boys and girls, men and women of all abilities. We have teams at both national and local level and all our games are free to watch! They're all played in the main games hall of Porty High School. Tomorrow see's the start of the new season with our three national league women's teams U16 (11am), U18 (1pm) and Senior (3pm) take on rivals Falkirk Fury. If you fancy more sport after the excitement of the Olympics/Paralympics then why not come along...

The club is committed to maintaining a strong relationship with the Portobello community, schools and local businesses. We are also proud to say one of our ex-players and former Porty FP, Rose Anderson became the first Scot to ever represent GB at Olympic Basketball this summer in London. Is there any other known Olympians who hail from Portobello?

Played for both Porty and Edinburgh when at school on the early 90's and loved it.Totally dominated the league's and cups for a couple of really memorable seasons.Recall the main rivals being Cumnock and Alness. Some good guys from Porty and St. Tams made up the team.Kinda fell away from the sport when other interests took over, which I regret now.

Basketball at Porty is a phenomenon there's no doubt about it. I would say the impetus began prior to 1988 with Sandy Sutherland, Bert McCall and the likes of Phil Sinclair who taught PE at the school in the early to mid seventies. Think he then went to work for David Murray who may have helped out at Porty financially. If my memory serves me correctly the Ladies were the better team and quite a few played for edinburgh and possible Scotland. Didn't Danny Costello and his family make a huge contribution?

Not sure about olympians but Porty has produced representative sports people in Football, Basketball, Hockey, Rugby, Fencing and numerous Water Polo players who made the GB team.
