What do you hope to achieve by belittling posters in this way Dadaist?

Is it to;
a) help posters improve their spelling
or
b) just air your irritation?

If the answer is a) then you will be sadly disappointed for a variety of reasons.
Spelling is most often "caught" rather than merely "taught".
Adults will find it extremely difficult to alter habits of decades. Some posters may be dyslexic and many others will not have a spell check facility on their browser. Not all of us are touchtypists and in a rush to post may make simple keyboard errors. Further more, a fair few of us may want to respond quickly to a thread and in so doing make errors which normally we would spot. And then again there are all those posts made in the wee sma' hours when a "tired and emotional" state of affairs influences our writing.
If you want to aid Adults to learn to spell better then offer your services to Community Education.


On the other hand, if it is answer b) to air your irritation , then you have done so on several occasions so far on this Forum.

Ultimately, all you will achieve is deterring users from posting by making them embarrassed and self-conscious, worried that some smart Aleck is going to come along and berate them for a perceived lack of literary skills.

Those of us who have problems with spelling are in good company, well the company of Stephen Twigg, School's Minister at least.



I don't think that Dadaist is having a go at anyone in particular (except maybe Beach Babe ) but I think there is a danger in making assumptions. Some users may be dyslexic or have other learning difficulties. For some, English may not even be their first language.

Having said that, I think that the general standard of spelling in the UK is falling and that is certainly a topic worthy of discussion.

I don't claim to have perfect spelling Bob, though I have been using the BBC's list of problematical spellings to coach my pupils in preparation for the Scottish final of the initial knockout competition so have been a bit of a swot on this subject lately
