Hello... we're nearly in September with winter not that far off...
Just wanted to float the idea of having some solar fairy lights around Portobello to brighten the dark nights?
Fairy lights add a magical fun feel to our streets in winter and somehow create a village atmosphere, drawing folk into the streets for shopping (helps local retailers) and generally add to the Christmas spirit.
Residents could put some in their garden trees and the council could join in. Solar fairy lights are economical to buy and they do work (I have some Everbright ones outside that are lit up from dark to dawn no matter the weather). It's a small solar panel slightly bigger than an i-phone that you attach to the tree / a post / a roof /whatever you want and position it to get maximum daylight.
thesolarcentre.co.uk sells 100 solar fairy lights for about 20 - 30 pounds with three attachment options but I'm sure there are other places that do them too. Took 10 minutes to set up and of course they are solar so free to run!
Can anyone think of some nice spots the council could put them? (Do any councillors read Talk Porty?) I thought fairy lights lining the bandstand and trees next to it at the Joppa end of the prom might look nice. Maybe somewhere around the High Street?
