Sunday 8th May sees the first Portobello open dinghy race of the season, run by the Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club. Entry to the races is free, and is for all non-motorised sailing craft. Participants should arrive before 1.30pm. Non-members can sign in as temporary members for the races, which will run all afternoon until about 4pm.
With no advance registration we have no idea how many will be racing this first weekend, but there should be plenty to watch from the beach!
For more information about joining the club, taking part in races, training or borrowing boats and sea kayaks, go to http://www.sailporty.org.uk
"We plan to undertake a full season of dinghy racing this year. Starting on May 8th and running over 15 Sunday afternoons until mid October we will be using the Portsmouth handicap system to encourage as many boats as possible from our fleet to enter. As this will be our first season’s racing we’d like as many members as possible to join in – don’t feel that you need to have any racing experience to get involved. Club boats are available for those without their own.
There will be prizes for the best adult and best U-18 crews with results taken from your best 8 races (so you don’t need to commit to every weekend over the summer). Our calendar on the website shows when races are planned to take place. Please email jkinsley@sailporty.org.uk with details of your boat and names of crew (indicating whether adult or U-18) if you’d like to take part."
