Rabbit Awareness Week

Rabbit welfare takes centre stage

Free expert advice on how to care for rabbits will be available this weekend at Fort Kinnaird, Edinburgh. Companion Care Vets, together with Pets at Home, are hosting a special Family Fun Weekend on the 15 and 16 of September, starting at 1pm, for people to learn more about these wonderful creatures.

With an “Alice in Wonderland” theme, including a treasure hunt and tea party, visitors are encouraged to dress up as a white rabbit, Cheshire cat, mad hatter or even as Alice herself, with prizes for the best costume. Lots of fun and informative activities are planned for the whole family, with Companion Care Vets offering FREE rabbit health checks throughout the month.

Rabbits are increasingly popular as pets – only cats and dogs are more popular in the UK - but many people lack the knowledge required to look after them properly. The fun weekend kicks off RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK, a UK-wide event to increase awareness of rabbit welfare and to encourage people to learn more about the special needs of these lovable animals.

Rabbits are highly intelligent, social, interactive and fun creatures that are extremely clean and can even be trained to use a litter tray. They have very individual and distinct personalities, and often live over ten years of age - making them every bit as worthwhile investing in as dogs and cats. Despite all this there are still a lot of myths and misinformation around the best care for pet rabbits, and indeed their welfare needs. It's actually very easy when you know how......

Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW) was created as an annual event, where rabbit experts such as vets, pet retailers, welfare charities and manufacturers work together during a dedicated week to educate the pet owning public about proper rabbit care and welfare.

We have a litter trained house rabbit, sadly he will not tolerate another bun but does get companionship from the humans and cat.
He's been neutered, is vaccinated but has ongoing teeth problems which needs the vets attention around once a year.
Sadly many people buy a rabbit thinking it can live in a wee hutch and live on carrots which is why RAW is such a good idea. Too many rabbits are bought without a thought of their care and needs leading to owners getting bored or fed up with the poor wee souls. I know of at least one rabbit rescue in the Lothians that has had to say no to any more bunnies as they are full to capacity.

Thanks for the support! Any exposure of what RAW is all about would be great. If you're at a loose end tomorrow please come along from 1pm, and pass this on the friends and family interested. There's lots of prizes up for grabs, including Rabbit booster (from Companion Care Vets!) and food/ toys for your favourite bun! :D
