I don't qualify as a schemie as I didn't live in a housing scheme, but I can certainly claim working class credentials. My parents lived (still live) in rented accomodation. Long story, but they pay rent to my paternal uncle - a local Tory councillor

- and have probably paid for the house several times over, although it will never be theirs. My father was a bricklayer and money was always tight. We didn't have central heating until after I had left home and I can remember having ice on the inside of my bedroom window in the winter. For many years things like telephones and TVs were luxury items that only the well-off could afford.
I'm sure that many of us had similar experiences and hopefully we appreciate what we have as a result.
