Edinburgh, as far as I know. This is my paternal grandmother's family. My grandmother (the one on the right with the very short hair) went to school at the place next to Dumbiedykes (you know the big building you can see from the radical road - I presume it's flats now) but I don't know exactly where they lived at the time.

The boy is the one in the middle. Dode. He was captured by the Japanese, held at the notorious Changi prison in Singapore before being moved on to some forced railway work in Burma. He survived and worked down the mines when he came back here. I always remember him as the nice old man who liked HP sauce. I used to sit on his knee!

Before we got a fridge the highlight of the week was getting the jelly to set in the 'front room' because it was so cold. Poor Rathbone didn't even have a socket in his bedroom so my Dad drilled a hole through the wall into the next room so he could plug in his record player. I think we got a phone in about 1974 because we were fed up having to go to the woman upstairs (who had the only phone in the stair) to speak to Prombabe when she moved to Carlisle. Remember 'party lines'? I was telling the kids at school about them and they didn't believe me

My kids also don't believe that videos hadn't been invented when I was young or that the only time the coal fire was lit in the 'big front room' was on Christmas day. They really just don't know they're born (and they still moan

).

I don't qualify as a schemie as I didn't live in a housing scheme, but I can certainly claim working class credentials. My parents lived (still live) in rented accomodation. Long story, but they pay rent to my paternal uncle - a local Tory councillor :roll:

- and have probably paid for the house several times over, although it will never be theirs. My father was a bricklayer and money was always tight. We didn't have central heating until after I had left home and I can remember having ice on the inside of my bedroom window in the winter. For many years things like telephones and TVs were luxury items that only the well-off could afford.

I'm sure that many of us had similar experiences and hopefully we appreciate what we have as a result.
