Replacement of HLR / Seafield / Portobello Rd Roundabout

Maureen Child sent the following note out on behalf of the cooncil. Its mostly old news and its prefaced by quite an attractive lady in a rainbow style jumper, carrying some colourful shopping bags in a celebratory pose.

What’s happening at King’s Road
roundabout?
From 15 November, we need to temporarily close Portobello High Street at
the King’s Road junction for around six weeks to allow us to complete the
work at the roundabout. The roundabout is being changed into a traffic-light operated junction, which will make it safer and bus journeys quicker.
We had planned to have all five approaches to the roundabout open while
works continued. However, this didn’t operate as well as we had hoped
which resulted in serious safety concerns and lengthy delays.

We have decided that the safest way to finish works is to temporarily close
Portobello High Street to through traffic at the roundabout for the remainder of the works. Whilst organising this, we have unfortunately had to suspend the works at the roundabout, as various other bits of work elsewhere have continued during this period.

Changes to your journey

The temporary closure of Portobello High Street at the junction will
effectively change the King’s Road roundabout into a signalised T-junction
with Seafield Road East, Sir Harry Lauder Road and Portobello Road
remaining open.

There will be a temporary diversion route for access to and from Portobello High Street, through Baileyfield Industrial Estate via Baileyfield Crescent,
Fishwives Causeway and Sir Harry Lauder Road. Bus routes will use this
diversion and continue to run in both directions along most of Portobello
High Street.

You will still be able to access King’s Road from Portobello High Street.
The right turn from Seafield Road East into Portobello Road will also
be temporarily prohibited, so that Seafield Road East and Sir Harry
Lauder Road traffic can pass through the site at the same time.
The new junction should be open before the Christmas holidays.

I think she's tried to cross the roundabout on foot on several occasions and the stress has caused her to lose a vast amount of weight. She's also waving her bags around in a manic manner suggestive of shell shock. Her nerves are in tatters poor soul.

So, day one of the latest diversions.

Wasnt too bad this morning going to work at 9:15ish am. Nice clear run.

Mind you, I doubt it will be so calm and easily traversed come Monday morning when everyone is trying to get to work.

The bus was having to go pretty slow to get through the industrial estate so that wont help matters, especially if there is a bus coming in the opposite direction 'cos there didnt seem to be much room.

Still, as long as I get to work in under 2 hours im happy enough.

As far as I can see, from my vantage point beside The Foresters', nothing much has changed. I wish there had not been the headline on the local news that said 'Portobello High Street Closed'. It's only closed from Fishwives' Causeway. I hope High Street businesses don't suffer from the rest of the surrounding area thinking the whole damn High Street is closed

I have to be in work at twenty to-quarter to eight every weekday, with no leeway, so I will post tomorrow to let you know how that goes ...

Heard going towards Leith was Ok but thats from folk who set out early, ie before 8am
The big question will be how well it works during this evenings rush hour
